i almost always NEED a food fix on leg day and on a heavy back day too. It's not like your going to be setting table and eating a 5 course meal on the bench press or something...just a few extra carb callories to help you through. I get sick if I don't eat something like trail mix or drink a pepsi. I also use smelling salts to help with my puke or passout feelings on leg days. Do what feels right bro.

The huge insulin release will cause rebound hypglycemia. The best thing to do is have a rich complex carb meal 3 hours before your workout then about an hour prior to have a simple carbohydrate drink. Later!
Mix up a shake of 1g simple carbs (glucose/dextrose/maltodextrin) per kilo body weight. Add 0.45g Whey per kilo body weight. Drink 1/3 immediately before and 2/3 imediately after workout No question about it - it works !! The benefits of supplying amino's and simple carbs before and after the workout will far outweigh the slight GH decrease.

I wasn't saying I was right... Just telling you what the book said. I don't actually do the workouts in that book. I think it's a bunch of hocus pocus. glad you guys cleared it up for me though. I don't eat in the middle of the workout my self, but I have pre and post shake in the locker room with protien complex carbs and creatine. the pre shake is the same but much smaller than the post shake and ussually I bring some gatoraid to sip on during and after the workout as well and lots of water.

I personally think having a good combination of protein/carbs an hour before my workout as well as a protein drink(with some carbs) after the workout is perfect for me. Post workout is a great time to throw some carbs back into your body 🙂 But I have tried sipping carb/protein drinks during my workout as well. Didn't seem to make a difference.

It had test subjects taking 50 ml of prtein drink 30 mins before working out. Then 50 ml every 15 minutes during the workout . The workout durations during the tests were 1.5 to 2 hrs long . The effects were supposed to be better nutrient uptake by the cells due to the insulin stimulating effects of eating . Also more energy during the workout . I have not found a follow up article .
I sip on a protein drink while working out. I do about 25 grams mixed with Powerade (Artic Shatter). I've found that it gives me a boost when I need it.
