In my point of view, that's the problem with the guys from Epidemiology, they get huge quantities of subjects, set up the SPSS (statistics software) newest version available, put all those monstrous data in there, and there they go try to correlate something like this thing of developing Parkinson's disease and milk consumption... It's just crazy. What about all of the people that have been drinking milk thru the centuries? Those guys gotta pay attention on what they say cause a lot of ordinary people listen to them too much and some of them just stop consuming milk and its derivates. Too bad, IMO.

Some intresting facts and comments on "milk" take it from me milk is a good drink and harms nobody..(unless you have a medical reason).i have been using milk in recipes for 20 years and believe me ..thats a fair amount of cows all sucked dry....at the end of the day if we believe everything we read and get told about drinks and food

These types of studies infuriate me to no end. My specialty is neuropathology, and they have been trying to link so many lifestyles to the causation of PD lately. For example they tried to link increased education to PD. I am on my way to a Double B.Sc, Double M.Sc, an M.D. and 2 PhD's.....If I wind up with parkinsons, it will be more likely that it is because I have an overactive dopaminergic system which explains propensity for learning then the education I receive.

I think when we start to see(and watch over time) the cell bodies in the substantia nigra (of a living patient) we will start to find many true causes, but not through making inane correlations.

As for drinking milk, I like the low carb....to me it is milk, just without the added sugar.......

Dropped the masters goal and math, accelrating program - going for the gold D.Sc or Ph.D
.... Performed my first surgery, patient survived, it was a great rush.

so will it be a good option to switch over to the soymilk instead? and i am sure if there are reports of people being affected by the Parkinson's disease there wont be many supporters of the dairy milk either.

Nice post. Lactose is a sugar but it absorbs more like a complex carb.

I thought homogenized milk caused heart disease? What about homogenized milk and pasterized milk? Compared to regular milk right outta the cow ??? My dad always says nuttin like filling up a cup of milk right from the cows tit, still warm, but he worked on a farm as a kid, laughs of skim milk , gets pissed when he sees it in the fridge hahaha

Besides I need the extra calories and fat

the study is quite clear that the results did not occur by chance (high confidence interval) however correlational studies are not causational, that is, all they do is observe a variable and link it to another variable only by association. cause is not established, cause could be any of a few hundred variables they studies or something completely different. These studies are good conversation pieces and perhaps seeds for further studies based on experimental design. To actually change your behavior based on something like this is very hasty and without merit.

It has been about 17 years since I took statistics so I can't really opine on whether this could have happened by chance or whether this study truly warrants the conclusion that there is a direct causal link between increased milk consumption and parkinson's disease. Is anybody up on statistics?

I go through 2-3 gallons of skim milk every week.

not based on this. drink skim milk and get your fat from a healthier source, ie one without saturated fat.

jb, as you might remember I see nothing wrong with saturated fat health-wise (and neither does my body as proven by blood tests).
Apart from that: not only fat gets skimmed in skimmed milk, healthy fat soluable substances get skimmed as well. So I kind of agree with need2getbigger's dad skimmed, pasteurized, homogenized milk pisses me off as well

i do remember that converstion. but i still stand by my recommendation, if you want to drink milk (and i do not except for fortified skim in my coffee) drink skim. Most people would most likely NOT benefit from the extra calories and sat fat in whole milk.
