Get big and ripped or die trying!!
for what it's worth, I am not a competitive lifter, I have squatted weekly as a part of my leg day for years. I lift off my heals or sometimes the whole foot. If I am rolling toward the forefoot, I am making my lower back vulnerable by hyperextension. This is a bad thing. I know many guys who have lifted for years and do not squat because of lower back problems.
I love this exercise for its total body involvment and would not like to give it up. My friends who do not squat do light sissy squats on a machine and lunges.
And we'll collect the moments one by one. I guess that's how the future's done. Feist, "Mushaboom", 2005
I'll bump headdoc's post - push off the heals.

As these other bros have said drive through the heels.
I try to keep my weight farther back on my heels. When I put too much weight on, I get my weight too far forward and I hunch over and hurt my back.
Definitely, when you are driving up from the heels you're able to maintain form easier!
