I just read an article in this month's Muscle Muscle magazine that ranked the top 5 pieces of exercise equipment. The Treadmill came in first, but the Elliptical & Stairmaster were tied for 3rd and the rowing machine placed last. What TRULY suprised me was that the Stationary Bike came in second!! Is it REALLY that effective in burning calories and helping to lower bodyfat??? Does anyone use it as their main source of cardio???

I used to use bikes but I kept breaking them so bought an expensive treadmill that has lasted me for a long time now. You can vary the intensity on a bike just like on a treadmill so I would question the results...

I'd rank it elliptical Treadmill cycle rower. This is my experience from both using heart rate monitors - ie at a perceived exertion on the elliptical my heart rate is higher so I burn more calories and have a better cardio improvement for the same effort. Also the bike overtrains my quads, the rower just has a low max heart rate for me. Outdoor running is the best cardio however - run on grass to have good cushioning. Far better than treadmills IMO

Bill Will, how much do you weigh? What kind of Treadmill do you own? Most of the Treadmills I've seen and can afford have 250lb weight limits. I weigh 270lbs, so I have to look that much harder for a quality piece of cardio equipment that can support my bodyweight. The only thing that I can find that is an Elliptical Trainer made by www.fitnessquest.com. It has a 275lbs capacity weight limit.

I have a bike at my place so I just get on it for 45mins in the AM and watch cartoons....or porn, whatever's on. If I do cardio at the gym I do like those elliptical riders. But usually for me its the bike.

My legs get smaller due to the increased range of motion of the cycle. The stairclimber, treadmill, and elliptical are not going to be as catabolic on the quads. This is especially true during precontest while dieting(the only time I do a large amount of cardio)

The model I have now is from I.Fit.com but I purchased it locally in a store. I have repaired it once but it was just some loose screws that held the back matt roller. I dont think you will see the differences in real life between bikes and treadmills as far as which one burns the most calories...it is the effort you put forth.

You might need to step up to a commercial grade for the weight support. They are usually heavier duty.

The bike kicks ass! I can't believe the fuckin treadmill camie in first! WTF?! I hate the impact of running. I also keep hearing that for some reason running is not good for a body builder. Well, the only way I can get to an intensity level that does anything for me is by running on the treadmill. If I just jogged i would need to do an hour and a half to get an results. I really don't like the treadmill. The only reason I use it is becuase the bike hurt my urethra. Note:Don't ever use the bike if you are just starting to cut up after bulking. I got on the bike after bulking and I hurt mu urethra. Or get a really soft cushy seat.
