I am starting this thread on behalf of a friend who does not have a computer. I talked her into joining the gym several months ago. She was already in good shape, but now has become so enthusiastic that she wants to compete (in the figure or body sculpt category). We work out together sometimes, and I encourage her to go quite heavy and will help spot her to failure. I suppose that that's ok for someone entering physique, but should workouts for women doing figure have a different emphasis?
From my understanding they are looking for femanine curves and an overall toned body. Not muscular in a BB sense. They will count off for being too muscular, vascular, or cut. It's more about proportion. If you can, look up The Fitness America Pageant on the net and print out some pics from the figure competition. I believe Tina Rigdon won last yr.
Thanks for your reply, Val. She is shapely and quite slender, so she feels it is natural for her to aim for the figure class. At this stage she is hardening up well and is looking good. She is watching her diet conscientiously too. I feel that I could help her more if she were doing a bb comp, but I feel out of my depth as far as advising her with figure.
