Just so we know, I was referring to sets after a thorough warm-up.If a person was simply warming up, and this was the reason to pyramid up, then why pyramid up on every exercise? Wouldn't one simply pyramid up on the first and for the rest of the exercises he performed pyramid down?
You know, this really made me stop and think, it is a very logical argument.
I think I'm gonna try it and see what happens.

Just recently, jb? Your first post implied to me that you didn't use it in the past, or don't use it currently.

ok, let me clarify. Usually one exercise a week i go for 3-6 rep maximums, in which case i do a warmup and then go for the max weight. The other exercises i usually pyramid up. Like anything else i think it best to mix it up and not stay with the same protocol for everything and forever. lately i have been really mixing it up. I have lost 30 lbs and am working on some definition issues. It is really nice to see the six pack again and have to dig out my lean and mean jeans.
So, the point i am agreeing on is if you want to go max weight, you need to hit it first thing. I avoid 1 rep max's for joint reasons.

and they serve no benefit but to stroke the ego; 1 rep max that is...
sometimes the ego needs stroked. I do them after a real 5-6 wk training period just to see where I'm at strengthwise.

I've been of the same mindset as you for a while now. Never made sense to pyramid up to me either. I still get results with going heavy first..
